Is it just me or is the world going down some weird pathway which appears to be leading relentlessly toward catastrophe? It seems to get stranger every day, what with the state of the global economy, wars and threats of more wars. Then as if that were not enough, the "we know what's best" brigade seem to be getting into every part of the individual's life, which is something that is really beginning to grate on me. In fact, I think I am in danger of becoming a real grump.
Everyday I watch or hear on the news or what passes for news these days another load of scaremongering on a wide variety of subjects. I am beginning to believe that someone somewhere has a "Pending Disasters" list so each day new and dire warnings can be announced via the television or radio by news presenters who all sound as if they have gone on some training course to learn the finer arts of reporting in what I can only describe as pre-programmed robotic voice. I call it their "special dirge voice". I would not be in the least bit surprised to turn on the TV one morning during an episode of the usual over dramatized news report to find that the presenter has got him or herself dressed in sackcloth and ashes while admonishing us all that another new bogey man or deadly pandemic is about to wipe us out.
It really is getting ridiculous and starting to become tedious in the extreme; then again, maybe it's just me, I don't know for sure but when I look back I remember a time when bad things happened but we did not all become gibbering idiots hiding behind our front doors and pleading with the authorities to protect us. Come to think of it I don't think any of us ordinary people expect that; more to the point normal working people are too busy getting on with their lives, families, etc to pay much attention to activities outside their immediate communities. Despite this, somehow over the last 10 to 15 years it feels as if something insidious has crept into society and although not everyone has noticed I for one believe that it is casting a dark and somewhat menacing shadow over day to day life.
What is this dark and menacing shadow you may wonder? Well once again maybe it is just me but for starters, I am getting pretty fed up of being lectured at on anything and everything. For example, this morning there was some discussion about legislation to ban people from smoking in their cars and while I know that the consensus is that cigarette smoke is bad for health, the last I heard petrol and diesel fumes did not do much for anyone's general well-being either. Which makes me wonder, once they get this legislation through and everyone is banned from smoking in their cars, what will be banned next? And who are these bloody do gooders anyway, more to the point, who the hell do they think they are? In the US I read that they even want to legislate against sugar! So the meddling is not just a strange affliction that has attacked the busy bodies of this country, as the modern terminology would probably phrase it, the art of meddling and intervening in other people's lives has gone viral.
I am really jarred off with the whole situation. I don't know about anyone else but I am beginning to feel that I am living in a post-country era; that is to say there is what I can only describe as an institutionalized way of life developing which is even infiltrating into the very privacy of my home. Or to put it another way some days, I find myself contemplating the fact that the entire country has become like one big institution such as a school or an "open prison", with new rules being introduced on a daily basis such that I can only explain it as a feeling of slow and pervasive suffocation of the individual. Or maybe it is just me!
